Prefer Roll Mill Profile Bending

By default in starting point Digital Factories, longitudinal profile bends (represented by Bend GCDs) are routed to one of the following operations in the Bar & Tube Fab process group :

  • Rotary Draw Bending of the Profile CNC Bending process

  • Profile 3 Roll Bending of the Profile 3 Roll Bend process

Administrators can customize the default and specify the following default behavior instead: A profile bend is routed to the following operation:

  • Bending operation of the Roll Forming Mill process

provided that both the following hold:

  • Bend has a sufficiently large radius of curvature.

  • Bend is the part's only profile bend.

  • Bend extends the length of the part.

In this case, aPriori assumes that such a bend is accommodated by a transverse curving unit at end of the roll forming mill. A profile bend has a sufficiently large radius of curvature if it can be accommodated by the top roller diameter of the mill's curving unit, as specified by the cost model variable curveUnitTopRollerDiameter (150 mm in starting point Digital Factories).

Administrators can enable bending on the Roll Forming Mill by default for such profile bends by setting the cost model variable preferRollMillProfileBending to true.

Users can override the default on a per-part basis with the setup option Prefer Roll Mill Profile Bending (defined on the Roll Forming - Coil node in the Process Options Editor).
